Think yacht charter is only for billionaires? Think again. When you compare it with the prices of luxury hotels and fine restaurant meals, a week on a chartered yacht or sailboat in Croatia can actually save you money! Not only do you have the flexibility of boating from port to port without worrying about ferry schedules, but many of Croatia's islands--such as the Kornati Islands--are only accessible by private boat. With your own chartered yacht or sailboat you can dock in remote coves that take you far away from the crowds on Hvar or Korcula Islands. Whether you're a raw beginner or an experienced sea salt, you can find a charter to suit your level. There are over 140 charter companies, with a capacity of 2,700 comfortable and modern vessels, operating in Croatia today, not to mention the many foreign companies. If you have no sailing experience, you'll want to opt for a skippered boat but experienced sailors can go "bareboat". For a "bareboat" charter you'll need to produce a valid recreational boat license as well as a radio certificate. When you rent the boat you'll need to fill out and certify the crew list. All changes to the crew while sailing must be reported to the Port Authority. If a bareboat charter sounds intimidating, you could take a sailing course. Charter CompaniesIn calculating the cost, remember that berth prices run from €25 to €50 per day, that petrol costs about €1 per litre and that your skipper (should you hire one) may cost about €100 a day besides meals which you are expected to provide.
