Sveti Andrija
Sveti Andrija

Maskin
Maskin

In fact Crveni Otok (Red Island) is not red and it's composed of two islets--Sveti Andrija and Maskin--not just one. Details. What's important is that these pine and scrub-covered islets make a wonderfully, relaxing day trip from Rovinj. Only a 20-minute boat ride lands you on Sveti Andrija, largely devoted to the four-star Hotel Istra, from which you walk across a short causeway to Maskin. There are no cars on either islet; nothing ruffles the air but sea and wind.

The island has been occupied since the 6th century when the Benedictines built a monastery on Sveti Andrija.

On Sveti Andrija, there's a watersports center with lessons in windsurfing or sailing. The stony beach has a shallow drop-off making it safe for kids.

Maskin's indented coast is dotted with rocky coves and paths that wind through the woods. Although there was once an official naturist site (FKK) that attracted many gays, now the naturism is unofficial and largely heterosexual.

So what can you do on Maskin? Swimming and snorkeling are the main activities. There are a couple of beach showers too. It takes about 40 minutes to walk around the island There's also a decent restaurant and plenty of places to picnic.

Getting to Crveni Otok

A large shuttle boat makes the trip from Rovinj to Crveni Otok every half hour during the summer; less often off season. The journey takes about 20 minutes and the boat leaves from the town center and from Zlatni Rt near the Hotel Park. The payment of 40HRK is made on your return trip from the island.
