Trip Planning

With such a wealth of cultural treasures, historic sights and natural wonders, it's hard to choose but the following sights are the highlights of Istria. I've put them in order of importance which is, of course, highly subjective.

Rovinj, CroatiaRovinj
The old town with the striking St Euphemia church bursts with cafes, shops, restaurants, galleries and Venetian monuments. Nearby is the pine-covered Zlatni Rt Nature Park with paths and beaches and offshore lies Red Island for a day of utter relaxation.

Roman amphitheatre, PulaPula
The Roman Amphitheatre is a magnificent sight and there are other Roman ruins scattered around town. Outside this busy city lies the Verudela and Premantura peninsulas for the most stunning Istrian beaches and coastal vistas.

Euphrasian Basilica, PorecPorec
More Roman remnants and a string of hotel resorts in and around town keep Porec busy but the real gem is the St Euphrasian basilica, a World Heritage Sight for its glittering Byzantine mosaics.

Motovun, IstriaMotovun
The best and most developed of the Istrian hill villages, Motovun offers a taste of Venetian architecture and spectacular views from the walls. Local artists and artisans have set up shops and galleries here.

Brijuni IslandBrijuni Islands
This national park once hosted Tito and his illustrious friends but I recommend it for the incredible beauty of the main island, Veli Brijuni, and the calm, clear waters perfect for snorkelling.

Groznjan, IstriaGroznjan
Istria's other hill village is rockier and more rugged than Motovun. Try to visit in the summer when an international music festival puts on outdoor concerts.

Buzet, IstriaBuzet
This hill town has an understated appeal that makes it a pleasant contrast from the busy coast. The town's commerce centers around truffles which appear on nearly every menu.
