With an area of 19 sq km, Murter Island is the largest in the Sibenik archipelago. The ground is hilly and karstic and farmland is scarce but there are olive, fig and almond orchards plus plenty of vineyards. Murter makes a good place to put together a visit to the Kornati Islands National Park. Not only is it the closest island to the Kornati, but many residents own property there and may be able to run you out there in a boat. Otherwise, there are a number of travel agencies running excursions to the national park. There are five settlements on Murter Island. The main village is Murter village in the northwest. North of Murter village are the remains of Roman houses with water cisterns. Along the steep and indented southern coast is Slanica bay with shallow waters and fine sand, bordered by pine and olive trees. The beach is popular with families during the day but at night the region's partiers head to the beach bars and dance under the stars. Another good beach spot is Tisno village which has two lovely pine-rimmed beaches. South of Tisno is Jezero which has a small harbour. Although named after the lakes (jezero) that form after a rainfall, most visitors come for the pleasant beach. Also in the northeast is Betina village.which has a sandy beach and a marina. It's a traditional fishing village and there are boats to rent. Accommodation on Murter IslandThree-star hotels on Murter Island Getting to Murter IslandMurter island is connected to the mainland by a drawbridge at Tisno.
