You may notice a certain subtle flavour underlying the Croatian dishes you sample. That flavour may well be due to the flavour enhancer, Vegeta, one of the most popular seasonings across former Yugoslavia. Yes, there's MSG (monosodium glutamate) ion the ingredient list but there's also a combination of dehydrated vegetables--carrot, parsnip, onion, celery and parsley--as well as salt.

Croatian home kitchens are rarely without a supply of Vegeta. Croatian cooks sprinkle Vegeta in soup, brodetto, rice, sauces to bring out the flavours. They use it in roasts, barbecues, poultry, fish and vegetable dishes to add a certain little something. The only dish you can be sure doesn't have Vegeta is palacinke!

For vegetarians, Vegeta is a godsend. You can make a simple broth of Vegeta for your risotto and rest assured that no animal products will pass your lips.

Vegeta is available in every supermarket and grocery store in Croatia but it's probably not available in your local stores? You can order Vegeta online from AmazonVegeta and start cooking like a Croatian!
