View of Dubrovnik's walls from the sea

Dubrovnik's exceptionally well-preserved walls are stronger on the land side as the city's defenders were more concerned about attacks from the land. Here they are "only" about 1.5m thick. This picture was taken in 1996 while Dubrovnik was still undergoing postwar reconstruction. You can clearly see the older roof tiles in the lower left and the Jesuit Church in the center which was in the process of being rebuilt. It's interesting to compare with the next picture, taken 10 years later.
